My boyfriend and I have been dating for almost a year and we’re thinking it’s time to combine households. We’re excited about taking our relationship to the next level, but it’s a little scary too. What’s your advice on moving in together?
You’re right about it being a little scary, but you can minimize the fright by going into this new venture with eyes open and all the Ts crossed. Make sure you have a solid game plan for the business side of cohabitation, specifically the financial end of it. Ask yourselves how the monthly expenses will look, plan accordingly (and include contingencies too for the rainy days that are destined to happen) and stick to the playbook you create. The other plan to stick with is the importance of compromise. A lot of drama can be avoided if you remember to embrace his ugly chair because he’s embracing your grandmother’s not-so-attractive lamp. You’re sure to hit some bumps on this new adventure, but remember those are “only for now” moments and that the big picture has many smooth roads ahead.
I just went through a bad breakup, and my Ex finally moved out. Granted there are a lot of holes in the space where his stuff used to be, but everywhere I look I think of him. I really don’t want to move but I can’t go on living like this.
I’m sorry things didn’t work out- it sucks, but you will move past the disappointment. A hidden blessing in every break-up is the opportunity to reinvent and renovate your life, and perhaps for you the best place to start is with your home. Obviously it was your place originally, so taking back that space and making it your own is exactly what to do. A little paint, a little furniture and a little shopping will give you both a distraction and a positive focus. And this project doesn’t have to break the bank either thanks to online discount sites, Home Goods and even estate sales. Have some fun revamping your space, and soon everywhere you look will remind you of you and the great things that will undoubtedly be coming your way.
